This week in Reno |
|

What may not be immediately obvious to most people who are new to the Reno/Tahoe area is that this area is living proof of what humanity can do to heal and beautify thier environment when they focus their will to it. 140 to 150 years ago during the great silver and gold rush of the late 1800's virtually every tree within 60 miles of the mine area had been cut down to be used for lumber or heating fuel. There are now, again, beautifully forested mountains to the west and east of Reno and Carson City that were, 120 years ago compleately stripped. A dead desert of dust and mud.
That environmentalist spirit, which stood up and revived this once blighted land, lives on today all over the Washoe area. Evidence can be witnessed in the acts of "Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful", the city of Reno, Reno's Public Transit (RTC) and so on...
